French Toast Recipe

with Apples and Cinnamon

A make-ahead French toast recipe for brunch made with fresh apples, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Make this casseole ahead the night before and bake in the morning.

French toast is one of those decadant pleasures that you may not have very often, but is completely satisfying when you do. It is an indulgent combination of sweetened apples, combined with cinnamon, milk, eggs, sugar, and thick cut French bread. It satisfies the palate as well as the senses. The crusty French bread soaks up the flavors of the apples, cinnamon, and vanilla, making is a tasty dish.

Smell the aroma of fresh apples baking with cinnamon and brown sugar and treat yourself and your family to a delicious French toast recipe for a Sunday morning meal. It's almost like having a slice of apple pie in the morning. It is sweet and rich and quite fulfilling.

Plus, the scent of apples and cinnamon baking in the morning is a wonderful way to wake up sleepy guests.

This option uses nice thick one inch slices of French bread, so you get a hearty serving. Of course, you can also use up just about any type of day-old crusty bread as well. That is the beauty of these types of casseroles. There really is no one right or wrong way to make them.

I'm guess I am not sure if this casserole really has any French origin, but is sure is tasty and easy to make when you have guests over, which is what counts in my book.

Serve with a fruit compote or spiced chunky pineapple sauce.

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Cooking Time: 35 minutes

Ingredient List:

5 tablespoons butter
3 large baking apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
2 tablespoons dark corn syrup
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
4 large eggs
1 cup milk
1-1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
French bread, cut into 1-inch thick slices

Kitchen Equipment Needed

Large heavy skillet
9" x 13" glass baking dish
medium-sized mixing bowl

Instructions:

Step 1: In a large heavy skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.

Step 2: Add the sliced apples and cook until tender.

Step 3: Add the brown sugar, corn syrup and cinnamon. Cook and stir frequently until the brown sugar is dissolved.

Step 4: Using a 9" x 13" glass baking dish, spray with a non-stick cooking spray and spread the apple mixture evenly.

Step 5: Arrange your bread slices in a single layer on top of the apples.

Step 6: In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, and vanilla until combined.

Step 7: Pour this mixture over the bread slices. Cover with aluminum foil or plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight or at least 4 hours.

Step 8: When ready to bake, preheat oven to 375 degrees. Remove the foil or plastic wrap and bake for 30-35 minutes until the mixture is golden brown like toast and firm to the touch.

Step 9: Remove from oven and cool in the pan for 5 minutes. Invert on a serving platter so the apple layer is on the top, just like a pineapple upside down cake. Serve this French toast warm with syrup and/or additional sweetened apples on top.

Serves 9-12.
